Carbon Offsetting Your Flights: Greenwash or Real Impact?

Emma Wilson 20 February 2026 8 min read Eco

Airlines now offer one-click carbon offsets at checkout. But do they actually do anything? We dig into the science.

In 2026, virtually every major airline offers a carbon offset option at checkout. But independent research suggests that fewer than 20% of offset projects deliver their promised carbon reductions. The key is choosing verified schemes.

Look for projects certified by Gold Standard or Verra. Direct Air Capture (DAC) projects, while expensive, are the most reliable. Alternatively, reduce your footprint at source by choosing direct flights — takeoff and landing account for the majority of per-flight emissions.

Better Alternatives

  • Choose Direct Routes: Each takeoff produces the most emissions. One direct flight beats two connections.
  • Fly Economy: First Class has a carbon footprint 4x larger per passenger due to space used.
  • Train for Short Hops: London to Paris by Eurostar emits 90% less CO2 than flying.
